The Truth About Pores!

In This Article:

"How do I shrink my pores?" is one of the top 5 questions I've been asked in my 15-year career. And I'm going to be honest with you: you can't actually shrink pores. But you can make them look dramatically smaller.

Let me explain the difference.

What Pores Actually Are

Pores are the openings of your hair follicles. Every single one contains a sebaceous (oil) gland that produces sebum - the oil that keeps your skin lubricated and protected.

Your pore size is largely determined by genetics. If your parents have visible pores, you probably will too. You can't change the physical size of the opening any more than you can change the size of your ears.

But here's the good news: what makes pores LOOK large is almost always fixable.

Can You Really Shrink Pores?

No product, treatment, or ingredient can physically reduce the size of your pores. If a product claims to "shrink pores," it's misleading.

What you CAN do is minimize their appearance by addressing the things that make them look bigger than they are.

What Makes Pores Look Larger

  1. Clogged pores. When sebum, dead skin, and debris pack into a pore, it stretches visibly. Clean the pore out, and it looks smaller.
  2. Excess oil. Oil reflects light differently than matte skin, making pores more visible.
  3. Loss of collagen. As you age, the collagen around your pores weakens, and they lose their tight, round shape. Think of it like a tent - when the poles weaken, it sags.
  4. Sun damage. UV radiation breaks down collagen and elastin, causing pores to stretch and sag over time.
  5. Dehydration. When your skin is dehydrated, it looks thinner, and pores appear more prominent by contrast.

5 Things That Actually Minimize Pore Appearance

1. Keep them clean with BHA.

Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, meaning it can get inside your pores and dissolve the clogs that stretch them out. Our Bright & Early Cleanser contains salicylic acid specifically for this reason. Use the 60-second cleansing rule.

2. Use retinol consistently.

Retinol regulates oil production and speeds cell turnover, preventing the buildup that clogs and stretches pores. Over time, it also stimulates collagen, which firms the skin around pores. Our Retinol Mafia is designed exactly for this.

3. Wear SPF daily.

Preventing collagen breakdown from UV damage is the best long-term strategy for preventing pore enlargement. Our entire SPF Collection protects without clogging.

4. Niacinamide.

Vitamin B3 regulates sebum production and has been shown in studies to visibly reduce pore appearance in 8-12 weeks.

5. Stay hydrated.

Well-hydrated skin is plumper, which naturally makes pores less noticeable. Use a hyaluronic acid serum, like our hydrating Supernal Serum and a good moisturizer.

What Doesn't Work

  • Ice cubes on your face. Temporarily tightens skin for about 10 minutes. Not a real solution.
  • Pore strips. Remove surface blackheads but don't address the underlying cause. Pores refill within days.
  • Heavy mattifying primers. They fill pores cosmetically but can actually clog them over time, making the problem worse.
  • "Pore-shrinking" toners. Most just contain alcohol that temporarily tightens skin. The effect wears off in an hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my pores bigger on my nose?

Your nose has the highest concentration of sebaceous glands on your face. More oil production = more visible pores. Salicylic acid cleansing with extra attention to the nose area helps.

Do pores open and close?

No. Pores don't have muscles - they can't open and close. Steam can soften the debris inside pores, making extraction easier, but it's not "opening" them.

At what age do pores get more visible?

Typically late 20s to early 30s, when collagen production starts declining. This is when a good retinol + SPF combo becomes super important for prevention.
